How to Measure Your Surface Before Ordering Peel-and-Stick Materials

Measuring a home surface before installation

Before ordering any surface material, accurate measurements are the best place to start. A few extra minutes of planning can help you choose the right product format and avoid ordering too much or too little.

1. Measure the length and width

Measure the length and width of the area you want to update. Keep the unit consistent throughout your calculation, such as inches, feet, centimeters, or meters.

Length × Width = Total Surface Area

2. Divide irregular areas into sections

If the surface has corners, alcoves, or different sections, divide it into smaller rectangles. Calculate each section separately and then add the results together.

3. Check the product format

Sheets are usually sold by piece or pack quantity, while rolls are calculated by width and length. Always check the product page for exact dimensions and coverage information.

4. Allow extra material

We generally recommend allowing approximately 10% extra material for trimming, pattern alignment, corners, and future repairs. Patterned products may need additional allowance.

Final checklist

  • Measure the complete surface area.
  • Check the dimensions of one piece or roll.
  • Confirm the pack quantity or roll length.
  • Add extra material for trimming and alignment.
